Long time San Diego news anchor and Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Board member Loren Nancarrow, passed away December 28th after a brave 10 month battle with brain cancer.

For almost 30 years, Loren educated and enlightened viewers with his vast knowledge of Earth and its climate on ABC 10 News, CBS 8 News and Fox 5 News.  Loren was an outspoken conservationist and environmentalist, a weatherman, anchor and reporter.  Loren was also a 5-time Emmy winner, 4-time Golden Mic winner, and co-authored four organic gardening books.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito’s Center for a Healthy Lifestyle is instituting a scholarship for children in Loren’s name.  This scholarship will teach healthy living to children and teens and inspire youth to live healthier lives through cooking, gardening and fitness.Loren and his family committed their lives to educating and growing youth in a way that had a positive, powerful impact on generations to come.

Loren will be greatly missed, but his smile and love for the outdoors and nature will continue on forever.

Pool Repairs.jpg
We Need Your Help. You Can Make a Difference.
The Issue
Due to the high level of interest in our Aquatics Programs, pool usage, and normal wear-and-tear, we have reached the useful lifetime on some key components and must replace them. These requisite components have kept the water and pool conditions in high quality over the past seven years, including the heaters. The replacement costs on the heaters alone are estimated to be in excess of $120,000.

FaceoftheFuture_Maddie Unruh.jpg
Meet Maddie Unruh
1st Grade Member at the Ocean Knoll Outreach Center

Maddie is a very positive role model. Although she is only in first grade, she is always the first one to do the right thing. She loves arts and crafts and always has a smile on her face. When roll call is taken, Maddie is always sitting quietly, facing forward, ready to listen. She is willing to lend a helping hand whether it is in cleaning up or sharing a toy. She is the type of friend everyone wants to have!

“We are lucky to have her at our club!” – Afterschool Supervisor

Vee Poffenbarger, Teen Room Supervisor at the La Colonia Branch
Vee has the difficult task of controlling a room full of 20 to 30 teenagers and persuading them to sit still long enough to complete their heavy workloads. Yet despite the hurdles associated with convincing 30 teenagers crammed into a small room together to do their work, she takes on all her challenges with determination and a positive attitude. Vee truly cares about the success and happiness of the teens in the program, and it is noticed and greatly appreciated by the teens, parents, and other staff members. Recently, one of the students who one might describe as “willful” wrote Vee a note expressing extreme gratitude and love for all she had done for her. It is reactions like this and the improvement in the students grades that show just how valuable Vee is and why she deserves to be recognized for all she does.
